The TurboLamik TCU is a standalone controller for the ZF 8HP automatic gearbox. It lets you run an 8HP behind any engine, with driving modes from full auto to race sequential, manual paddle or button shifting, and clutch control for launch and drift.

The order you do things in matters more than any single setting. Most dead swap gearboxes come from running adaptation on a wrong torque value. Get the sequence right and the box looks after itself.

The order of operations

Work top to bottom. Each step links to the chapter that covers it.

  1. Confirm the hardware. Identify your 8HP variant, check it has a 16-pin mechatronics (10-pin units cannot be externally controlled), and confirm your ECU and gear selector are supported. See Supported setups.
  2. Do the mechatronics modification. The internal TCU is cut out and a board is soldered in its place. It is not reversible, so get it right. Supported setups lists the hardware gotchas.
  3. Wire it. Permanent 12V (not ignition-switched), solid grounds, and either MAP, RPM and TPS to the analog pins or those channels over CAN. See Wiring & pinout.
  4. Connect TunerPro and match versions. The XDF and ADX files must match the firmware on the unit or it will not read live data. See Software & config.
  5. Set the torque source and build the base torque table. This is the foundation everything else sits on. See Torque setup.
  6. Verify torque before you drive hard. Watch the engine-torque channel live: it should read roughly 10-20 Nm at idle, and stay low holding 3000 and 5000 RPM unloaded. If it does not, fix the table first.
  7. Drive it slow. P1 auto, gentle. Shifts should be smooth with no flare. Read the logs, not the seat of your pants.
  8. Only now, enable adaptation. It learns clutch fill and pressure, and only learns correctly once torque is right. See Shift quality.
  9. Refine the feel. Shift firmness, converter lockup and clutch slip. See Shift quality, Lockup & slip and Clutch slip.
  10. Set up the programs for how you drive. Street, sport, manual, drag or drift. See The 8 modes and Program tuning.
  11. Add the race features last. Trans-brake, bump and launch, once the basics are solid. See Launch & drag.

The one rule that saves gearboxes

Verify torque, then adapt. Never the other way round. Adaptation stores what it learns against the torque value it saw. Learn on a wrong value and the box trains itself into bad fill pressures you cannot undo by correcting torque later; you have to reset adaptations and start again.
