Clutch slip and the virtual clutch
Two related tricks: let the gearbox clutches slip on purpose so a high-idle engine can creep like a stock automatic, and put a real clutch pedal on an 8HP. Both come from the same idea, the TCU controls clutch pressure directly, so it can do DCT-style takeup or obey your left foot. This page is built on the Zero To 60 (8speed.au) videos where both were set up and driven, cross-checked against the firmware V10.75 XDF. Do torque and adaptations first.
This is gearbox clutch slip, not converter slip. Converter lockup slip is covered in lockup & slip.
What the clutch slip strategy is
Normally the 8HP pulls away through the torque converter with all the clutches for the current gear locked. The slip strategy changes that: the box engages two of the three clutches for the gear fully and feeds the third in progressively, exactly how a dual-clutch box takes up drive. The converter is not doing the work, the slipping clutch is.
Who needs it: engines with a high idle. A rotary or a big-cam V8 idling at 1100+ RPM through a stock converter either creeps too hard or needs an expensive custom converter. Slipping a gearbox clutch instead gives a normal, controllable creep at any idle speed.
Clutch pressure in these tables runs on a 0-250 scale, where 250 is fully locked.
The fields and real values
Under the Clutch Slip Strategy category in the V10.75 XDF:

On the lightest car they ran, the B clutch sat around 6 (of 250) at idle. The same values serve forward and reverse, though reverse needs a touch of throttle to creep.
Careful with Add Press. Footbrake OFF: the XDF has two fields with that exact title, one in
Clutch Slip Strategy (address 7936) and one in Launch Settings (address 8054). Edit the slip one.
Watching it live
Two gauges tell you what the clutches are doing:
- Lockup slip: engine RPM vs input (turbine) RPM, the converter. A ±2% bounce at idle is normal.
- Slipped gear: input RPM vs output RPM through the active gear ratio, the box clutches. This should read 0 in steady driving and only twitch during shifts. Anything else means a clutch is slipping under load.
Dangers and limits
Do not do burnouts or brake-stands with the slip strategy active. Under power the slipping clutch must be commanded to 250/250 (fully locked). A brake-stand with a partially-fed clutch puts full engine power through a slipping pack, and one car in the Zero To 60 fleet melted its gearbox exactly this way. Before any sustained full-power abuse, check the live data: pressure at 250 and the Slipped-gear gauge at 0.
The trans-brake is unavailable while the slip strategy is on, it needs fully locked clutches to hold the box. Race Start (launch mode) still works.
Firmware 10.74 gotcha: semi-slip behaviour stayed active even with every Enable-slip flag off,
the B clutch kept feeding progressively instead of locking. The workaround is Minimum Clutch Press. Drive = 250, which forces the clutch fully closed. Not yet confirmed whether
10.75 fixed this, so if your takeup feels soft with slip “off”, check that field.

The virtual clutch pedal
Firmware 10.71+ can read a clutch pedal and disengage the box clutches with it. Clutch kicks, manual-style takeup, you can even stall it. Zero To 60 tuned theirs to the point of calling it “exactly identical to a manual”, verified by tandem drifting it.
Hardware
Any linear 0-5V potentiometer on the pedal. The TCU reads it on Virtual Clutch Input, which
defaults to analog input 2. No special sensor needed.
Prerequisites
- Firmware 10.71 or later.
- Run adaptations first. An un-adapted box gives early clutch slip, and you will chase pedal calibration problems that are really adaptation problems.
Sensor calibration
Clutch Sensor Calibration maps pedal voltage to clutch position. Build in dead zones at both ends:
- 0% (fully released) below ~0.9 V, roughly the first 5 mm of travel, so pedal rattle and a resting foot do nothing.
- 100% (fully disengaged) at ~4.0 V, even if the pedal reads 4.8 V on the floor. Mid-drift you will not always floor it perfectly, and a not-quite-floored pedal must still fully disengage.
Bite point and pressure ramp
Clutch Sensor Press Cal maps pedal position to clutch pressure (0-250). Find the bite point
empirically: 2nd gear, manual program, release the pedal slowly and note the pressure at which the
car starts to creep. Theirs was 60-65. Then build a ramp through it, their working example:
30 / 40 / 50 / 60 / 75 / 75 / 90 / 110 / 150 / 250 Verify the feel in a second gear too, different gears use different clutch packs.
Closing time
The Clutch closing time tables set the delay between releasing the pedal and the clutch actually
closing. The default gave about 0.5 s of lag on release; tuning it out is what made the pedal
feel like a manual.
Behaviour to know
- Engine braking is direct drive. Coming down a hill, the box is mechanically coupled, so the clutch stays necessary until near idle speed, exactly like a manual.
- The box is ready about 5 seconds after startup, do not dump the clutch the instant it fires.
- You can stall it. That is the point.
The Close-Clutch-in-neutral warning
For drift and high-power cars, keep the Close Clutch in neutral flag off. With it on, 10.71
takes up drive on a single clutch, and on a ~600 hp car that clutch blew through. The cost of
leaving it off is fractions of a second of extra delay when engaging D or R. Cheap insurance.
