How the 8HP works

You do not need to be a transmission engineer to tune one, but knowing what the box is doing makes every setting make sense. This is the short version: enough to understand why torque comes first and why the box has to learn.

The ZF 8HP is a clutch-to-clutch automatic. The TCU commands the gearbox directly, and almost everything you tune is about how it commands the clutches.

Gears and clutches

Inside are four planetary gear sets and five shift elements (clutches and brakes). It is not a Lepelletier design; that is the older 6HP. The clever part: exactly three of the five elements are engaged in any gear, and a shift swaps just one of them. One element releases as the next applies. That single overlap is why the 8HP shifts so cleanly, and why shift feel is all about the timing and pressure of that handover.

Eight forward ratios run from a deep first to two overdrive top gears, with sixth as direct drive.

For tuning, the useful fact is which clutch each shift uses, because adaptation learns per clutch, not per gear:

No pressure sensors, so the box has to learn

The 8HP reads only three sensors: oil temperature, input (turbine) speed and output speed. There is no pressure sensor and no clutch position sensor. The TCU commands clutch pressure through nine solenoids (seven variable-force for the clutches and line pressure, two for the parking lock) and works out clutch pressure from solenoid current, never from a direct reading.

That one fact explains the whole calibration:

  • Why adaptation exists. The box has to learn what its pressure commands actually do, and re-learn as the clutches wear.
  • Why wrong torque is so damaging. Pressure is set from torque, with no sensor to catch the error. Tell the box the wrong torque and it clamps with the wrong pressure.
  • Why the maps are full of time and pulse corrections instead of pressure targets. The TCU is shaping a commanded current over time, not chasing a measured pressure.

The converter and lockup

A torque converter sits between the engine and the gearbox, with a lockup clutch that clamps it solid once you are moving. The 8HP locks up early and stays locked in most conditions, which is good for efficiency and heat. The TCU can also hold a small controlled slip across the lockup clutch for smoothness. Sustained slip is where heat comes from, so the lockup and slip settings matter for box temperature.

What happens when power is lost

If the TCU loses power or a solenoid drops out, the hydraulics default to a single mechanical gear (sixth). The car limps home in one gear rather than freewheeling. Worth knowing when a fault drops you into limp.

Variants

The number is the rated input torque in newton-metres divided by ten: an 8HP45 is rated near 450 Nm, an 8HP70 near 700, an 8HP90 near 900. That rating is the clutch capacity ceiling, so match the box to your engine’s torque, not just its power. The last digit also tells you the generation (45, 70 and 90 are first generation; 50, 75 and 95 are second; 51 and 76 are third), which matters because ratios and some internals differ and base maps are not interchangeable between them. An A or X suffix means an all-wheel-drive version with a front output.

Everything on the left is a map you edit. Nothing on the right changes with a tune, so if a goal needs something on the right (more holding power, a different stall speed), it is a hardware job.
